For the second year running I am busy preparing to be a part of the Women's Health Surgical team to Nepal in March.

We hope to operate on approximately 80 women with uterine prolapse or obstetric fistula, many of whom live in remote areas and have little access to health care which they cannot afford. We see women of all ages from young women in their 20s to women who have had a prolapse for more than 30 years. They suffer from pain, discomfort and incontinence. They are often ostracised from their families and communities. Most have suffered pregnacy loss and have had children die soon after birth or in infancy.

One patient with obstetric fistula we were able to help last year had been living in the cow shed because of her "unclean" state, and the thing she was most looking forward to when she returned home was to cook in her own kitchen. This is one of the heartbeaking stories we hear all the time.

We estimate that it costs about $300 for each operation - this covers all costs including surgery, accommodation, pathology, medication, transport and food for the patient and their accompanying family member.

Open Heart International has been coordinating projects like this for over 28 years.  In excess of over 140 trips have been coordinated and over 5,000 lives have been transformed!
